MIDI for Guitarists: A Beginner's Guide

MIDI for Guitarists: What It Is and Why You Need It

MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) is a communication protocol that lets musical devices talk to each other. For guitarists, MIDI is the key to unlocking hands-free control of your effects, seamless preset switching, and a more professional live rig.

If you've ever wanted to switch between song presets with a single tap of your foot, toggle effects on and off without bending down, or sync your delay to a tempo—MIDI is how you do it.

How MIDI Works (The Simple Version)

Think of MIDI as a remote control for your gear. A MIDI controller (like a footswitch) sends messages—"switch to preset 3" or "turn on effect B"—and your effects pedal responds accordingly.

MIDI messages include:

  • Program Change (PC): Switch to a specific preset number
  • Control Change (CC): Adjust a parameter (like turning an effect on/off or changing a knob value)
  • Note On/Off: Trigger or stop a note (more relevant for synths)

For guitarists, Program Change and Control Change are the two most important message types. PC messages switch your presets, and CC messages control individual parameters.

MIDI Connections: The Different Types

Traditional 5-Pin DIN MIDI

The classic round MIDI connectors that have been around since the 1980s. Reliable and universal, but the cables are bulky.

TRS MIDI (3.5mm)

Many modern pedals use 3.5mm TRS jacks for MIDI—same connector as a headphone jack. Saves space, but there are two wiring standards (Type A and Type B), so make sure your devices match.

USB MIDI

USB MIDI is increasingly common, especially on smart pedals like the Stratus® by Chaos Audio. The advantage: USB can carry power and data simultaneously. The challenge: connecting a USB MIDI device to traditional MIDI gear requires a USB MIDI host.

That's exactly what the Knot by Chaos Audio does. This pocket-sized device bridges the gap between USB MIDI devices (like Stratus®) and standard MIDI controllers, with both TRS MIDI in and out ports.

What is a MIDI USB Host?

A MIDI USB host is a device that can "host" USB MIDI devices—meaning it provides the power and communication interface that USB devices need. Most MIDI footswitch controllers output traditional MIDI (5-pin DIN or TRS), so to connect them to a USB MIDI device, you need a host in between.

The Knot is designed specifically for this purpose:

  • USB-A host port for connecting Stratus® or any USB MIDI device
  • TRS MIDI IN and OUT ports (supports both Type A and Type B)
  • USB-C or DC power (6-12V with automatic polarity detection)
  • Merge mode to combine MIDI from multiple sources
  • Pocket-sized (60mm × 60mm × 10mm)

Setting Up MIDI with Your Guitar Rig

Basic MIDI Setup

  1. Choose a MIDI controller: Footswitch controllers from brands like Morningstar, Disaster Area, or Pirate MIDI are popular choices
  2. Connect your controller to your effects unit via MIDI cable (5-pin, TRS, or through a USB host like Knot)
  3. Assign MIDI messages: Map Program Change messages to your presets and Control Change messages to specific parameters
  4. Test and refine: Walk through your setlist and make sure every preset switches correctly

MIDI with Stratus® and Knot

  1. Connect your MIDI footswitch controller to Knot's TRS MIDI IN port
  2. Connect Stratus® to Knot's USB-A host port
  3. Power Knot via USB-C or DC
  4. Configure MIDI mappings in the Stratus® app
  5. Now your footswitch directly controls Stratus®—switch presets, toggle effects, and control parameters hands-free

Common MIDI Terms for Guitarists

  • Channel: MIDI has 16 channels. Make sure your controller and pedal are on the same channel.
  • Program Change (PC): Switches presets. PC #1 = Preset 1, PC #2 = Preset 2, etc.
  • Control Change (CC): Adjusts parameters. CC #1-127 can be assigned to different functions.
  • MIDI Thru: Passes MIDI messages along to the next device in the chain.
  • MIDI Merge: Combines MIDI from multiple sources into one output (Knot supports this).

Why MIDI Matters for Modern Guitarists

MIDI transforms your guitar rig from a static collection of pedals into a programmable performance instrument. With MIDI:

  • Switch between verse, chorus, and solo tones with a single footswitch tap
  • Control expression parameters (wah, volume, modulation rate) with expression pedals
  • Sync delay and tremolo to your drummer's tempo
  • Build setlists with ordered presets for seamless live shows
