Updated September 10, 2026. This comparison uses current manufacturer specifications. Chaos Audio makes Nimbus, which is available for preorder. The BOSS model discussed here is the Katana-50 Gen 3; other Katana versions have different features.
Nimbus and Katana-50 Gen 3 at a glance
| Feature | Chaos Audio Nimbus | BOSS Katana-50 Gen 3 |
|---|---|---|
| Amplifier and speakers | 100W stereo; custom PowerBass collaboration speakers angled at 15° | 50W Class AB; one 12-inch speaker |
| Tone creation | Native NAM A2-Lite playback, AI FX Builder and pre-made effects | Six Tube Logic amp characters, each with a variation; five effects sections |
| Instrument inputs | Two XLR / ¼-inch combo inputs | One ¼-inch guitar input, plus Power Amp In and auxiliary input |
| Recording | USB-C audio interface | USB-C recording with IR-based cabinet sound |
| Wireless audio | Bluetooth audio streaming | Requires the optional BT-DUAL adapter |
Manufacturer power ratings alone do not establish which amp will sound louder in a room. Speaker sensitivity, cabinet design, placement and the sound you choose also matter.
Two ways to build a guitar sound
Nimbus lets you load compatible NAM captures and combine one NAM model at a time with effects and cabinet IRs. AI FX Builder adds a different creative workflow: describe an effect, have it generated in the cloud, then play the finished effect locally. Nimbus includes 30 AI builds per month. Native NAM has replaced the AIDA-X approach described in earlier Nimbus material.
Katana-50 Gen 3 centers on BOSS amp characters and effects, with hands-on controls and deeper editing in BOSS Tone Studio. Power Control provides lower-output settings for practice. This is a straightforward option if you want a conventional guitar combo and a defined onboard sound library.
Both can record over USB
A separate audio interface is not automatically required with either amp. Check the manufacturer's instructions for your computer, recording software and monitoring setup. Nimbus adds a second combo input for another instrument or microphone; Katana-50 Gen 3 is focused on a single guitar input.
Price and delivery
Nimbus is listed at $599 USD for preorder as of this update. Optional upgrades cost extra. For the latest delivery estimate, see the Nimbus product page. Check an authorized BOSS dealer for the current Katana-50 Gen 3 price and availability; the older article's price range covered unspecified Katana models.
Which fits your setup?
Consider Nimbus if stereo playback, two combo inputs, native NAM and creating custom effects are central to your plans, and the preorder timeline works for you. Consider Katana-50 Gen 3 if you want a 1x12 guitar combo built around BOSS sounds and hands-on operation. If you need an amp for an upcoming performance, confirm stock and delivery before ordering.
