Develop effects for Stratus and Nimbus
By Landon McCoy · Updated October 3, 2026
Build an effect once for the shared Chaos Audio platform, then test and publish it for Stratus and Nimbus.
Applies to: Stratus and Nimbus.
Choose your route
| Route | Workflow |
|---|---|
| Browser / FAUST | Use FX Builder to write code or get AI assistance, audition it, create a UI, and publish privately. |
| Native C++ or JUCE | Use the Dev-Portal toolchain to build a compatible ARM .so, upload it to FX Builder, create its UI, and test on hardware. |

Start with the current documentation
Chaos Audio Dev-Portal explains the plugin contract, real-time safety, builds, hardware testing, and Tone Shop submission. Use the main branch’s current guides rather than older “9 KNOB” test-effect instructions.
Know the boundaries
- A desktop VST, AU, or AAX file cannot simply be installed as a hardware effect. It must be developed/ported for the Chaos Audio format.
- Native NAM playback in the products is separate from the developer NAM SDK, which the Dev-Portal still lists as planned.
- Browser audition does not replace checking CPU load and audio behavior on hardware.

Use an existing plugin in your DAW
If you want to install available Tone Shop effects on a Mac or Windows computer rather than develop a hardware effect, see the desktop plugin installer guide for supported formats and current early-access limitations.
